Marion Merrell gets approval to make generic drugs

Marion Merrell Dow Inc. said yesterday that it had received regulatory clearance to manufacture generic versions of several frequently prescribed drugs.

The approval covers Gemfibrozil, prescribed for patients with high cholesterol levels; Naproxen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, and Naproxen Sodium, also prescribed for inflammatory conditions.

Marion Merrell Dow, based in Kansas City, Mo., has distributed the three products but the clearance will enable its Chelsea Laboratories Inc. manufacturing unit to make them at its plant in Monroe, N.C. Marion Merrell Dow, a division of the Dow Chemical Company, agreed in May to be acquired by Hoechst A.G. of Germany.
